It’s been a busy week for Amazon. The online retail giant confirmed the acquisition of Whole Foods and later announced that it will be partnering with IKEA in its retail business. But if you thought this was enough business for a week, think again. Amazon is now venturing into fashion. The retail giant has introduced the Amazon Prime Wardrobe. This is an exclusive Prime fashion service that will allow the customers to give clothes a try before finally deciding if they want to buy them or not. The Prime customers will have the chance to buy the clothes they like or send the ones they don’t like back without paying anything.

To put it simply, Amazon is now offering you a virtual fitting room. The main goal of this program is to address the issue of returns in online shopping. Data from Nazar noted that at least 48% of people surveyed said that they had returned an item purchased online in the last year alone. This shows you how big of a problem this can be. Amazon wants to make this easier and cheaper. Its new Amazon Prime Wardrobe service will handle returns for customers so that they don’t really have to.

The program is actually very simple. The shoppers will fill their boxes with at least three clothing items that they want. If they try these clothes and feel they don’t want them, they’ll just have to put them in the box and send them back free. Amazon will provide a bonus to customers who will keep 3 or 4 of the total items ordered through the boxes. The bonus will come in form of a 10% price break. It’s a simple try-before-you-buy program and while it’s not the first, it’s definitely a big news from the retailer. Besides, Amazon has a wide range of clothing items for you to buy and this gives you a chance to try out many things.

You can also get shoes and accessories if you want. There are at least 1 million eligible items that will be offered under the program. This gives customers a ton of options. Amazon Prime Wardrobe is now in the beta testing phase. The American online retailer has, however, not indicated when the launch will be. It is also too early to tell just how successful the program will be. However, one thing is clear that a lot of people are getting more comfortable buying clothes from Amazon and the added service will surely come handy.

There are experts in the fashion industry who feel that the Amazon Prime Wardrobe is a simple way of trying to level the playing field between online clothing sellers and physical stores. Unlike in physical stores where customers can try on clothes before they buy them, this was not a privilege given to online shoppers who instead had to deal with many returns. Amazon hopes that its program will pioneer a new age in online clothes shopping and looking at the success of various ventures the retailer has been involved in, there is no reason to believe that this one won’t be a success too.
