“Sonic the Hedgehog” movie will be heading to theaters in November 2019. As fans look forward to it, Paramount Pictures has decided to offer a teaser. One of the things that have come out so far from the teaser is Sonic’s new big screen look. It’s the first time fans are seeing the look. Until now, Sonic has largely been known as the mascot of Sega. Sega is a Japanese video game developer that competed with major names like Nintendo during the 1990s. Some of its popular consoles included the Game Gear and the Sega Genesis.
Sega has also produced a number of games like the “Sonic the Hedgehog” series. Although the Japanese company hasn’t released a console in over ten years, the game series “Sonic the Hedgehog” has been hitting the markets since 1991 when it first came out. The latest game in the series was in fact released this year. The game has become very popular in different parts of the world and as such, we have seen a few cartoon spin-offs. Legions of committed fans too have been busy creating their own Sonic art and original characters. With this kind of fan base, it was only a matter of time before a movie came out.
However, based on the teaser that we have seen so far, it doesn’t seem like the Sonic character shares any connections with past Sonic games or even the cartoons. Instead, the movie brings out Sonic as a CGI character. The filmmakers are comparing this to Seth MacFarlane’s approach to “Ted.” Sonic’s design is also strikingly different from the games. For example, his fur is made of individual hairs. The Sonic character in the games had a solid blue color. The movie also brings out Sonic with a much more human looking physique, with more defined arms and legs.
The film’s synopsis is, however, interesting. It starts off with Sonic on the run from the government. In order to survive the hunt, he enlists the help of Tom Wachowski, a police officer who is played by James Marsden from the popular HBO TV show Westworld. The voice over for Sonic is done by Ben Schwartz. Schwartz became famous after playing Jean-Ralphio in Parks & Recreation, a sitcom that aired for a few seasons on NBC. Sonic’s nemesis in the movie is known as Dr. Robotnik and he will be played by Jim Carrey.
Despite these notable design changes on how Sonic looks, many fans on social media don’t seem too bothered. But they are quite a few who have seen the funny side of it. In light of this, there hasn’t been any shortage of memes making fun of the new look on various social media platforms. Some fans are also proposing their own redesigns of the character. The movie is definitely something to look forward to. Paramount Pictures has confirmed that the film is already in post-production and it will be released on November 8, 2019.
