1. Forget The Common Artwork Places

A big painting over the couch? A gallery wall behind the tv? Forget the usual places. While they usually work well, try new and unexpected places to hang your artwork instead and make them the focal point, bringing interest and evoking a surprise element on the guests. Try hanging a big painting on a wall that comes straight from a hallway, facing the mirror on another wall so it shows in the reflection too, or even facing the stairs, so the person keeps looking at the artwork when they’re going up or down the stairs.

2. No Need To Follow A Style

Instead of making the whole room follow a certain style, say rustic, modern, or minimalist, try mixing and matching different pieces of furniture and creating your own balanced style. Combining a rustic table with minimalist chairs or even matching modern and traditional pieces creates a stunning and fascinating space. Combining different styles in a creative composition makes the room much more interesting and energetic.

3. Match Different Finishes

Depending on the style and color scheme of the house, there’s no need to match all the finishes in a room. Combining matte cabinets with a glossy table, for example, can make for an interesting design. You also don’t need to match the metals every time: playing with brushed nickel fittings, a copper hood, and brass fixtures can create an interesting and balanced combination that works. Don’t be afraid to try!

4. Mix Woods

A common design rule states that you don’t mix different wood species in a space. Well, do you want to create an interesting space that evokes style and personality? Break the rule. Matching dark hardwood floors with a bright cream wooden ceiling creates a dazzling room, while different toned furniture also brings a special touch to the space and complements the overall design.

5. There’s No Need To Match Everything

When we start to design a room, the first thing we work towards is having everything match. The furniture, the architecture, the artwork… Well, forget that. Of course following a style and some basic rules can land you a beautifully designed room, but if you want to create a dazzling, stunning, and breathtaking room instead of one that’s “just beautiful,” then don’t worry about matching everything. Mix materials and textures, mix neutrals with deep and bright colors, pair traditional furniture with modern artwork, and fill the room with your personality. Let the creativity flow and design the perfect space that you will be proud of.
