The Golden Globes event has just been concluded and this year’s event ushered in the start of new awards season as feature films including Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody, Roma, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won awards. However, there weren’t many surprise wins or losses. Bohemian Rhapsody was the talk of the town as it took the top prizes including the Best Picture. The film also managed to get the Best Drama award and the Best Actor for star Rami Malek.

The award for the Best Director went to Alfonso Cuaron for his role in the Netflix feature film Roma. The Best Actor for comedy/musical went to Christian Bale for his role in Vice. However, perhaps the most surprising award of the evening went to Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse. The film took home the best animated feature award. Glenn Close also took home the Best Actress award for her role in The Wife. This was also another surprise. A lot of people were looking at Lady Gaga as possibly the better-placed actress to take home the award for her role in A Star is Born.

Despite this, it’s also important to note that the 2019 Golden Globe was a big event for superhero movies. It was also clear that the celebration of diversity was evident right from the start. For instance, Black Panther earned a nomination in the Best Picture category. The movie is the first cinematic installment from Marvel that features a black actor in the lead role. Crazy Rich Asians, another movie that drew praise for its Asian-centric cast, was also nominated for the Best Picture in a Musical or Comedy. Although the movies didn’t take the ultimate prize, the fact that they made it to the list of nominees was seen by many as a huge statement by Hollywood in support of diversity in the industry.

The Golden Globes is not only about movies though. The event also has awards for TV shows and just like the films, we didn’t get too many surprises here either. The award for the Best TV drama went to The Americans as Michael Douglas won the Best Actor in a Television series Musical or Drama for his role in The Kominsky Method. Sandra Oh took home the Best Actress in a TV series in the Drama category for her role in Killing Eve. The Kominsky Method won the Best TV Series Musical or Comedy as The Assassination of Gianni Versace took home the award for the Best Limited TV series or movie.

Ben Whishaw from A Very English Scandal was also honored with the Best Supporting Actor in a limited series or movie. The Best Supporting Actress in a limited series or movie went to Patricia Clarkson for her role in the hit thriller Sharp Objects. The Golden Globes are held each year. The award show is one of the major ones in the world and attracts a wide range of Hollywood stars around the country. The event also features categories for foreign films.
