Jimmy Kimmel went viral yesterday after taking a moment during the opening of his show to talk about his experience in the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital, where his wife gave birth to a baby boy.

The baby had to go through an incredibly risky open-heart surgery that lasted three hours. Fortunately, the boy is now home, alive and well.

However, near the end of the video, Kimmel brings attention to something that has been worrying Americans more and more each day: Trump’s alarming cuts to healthcare institutions.

President Trump last month proposed a $6 billion dollar cut in funding to the National Institute of Health, and thank God our congressmen made a deal last night to not go along with that, they actually increased funding by $2 billion dollars and I applaud them for doing that. - Jimmy Kimmel

The cuts come from the argument that the health care system approved by former President Barack Obama, allowing nearly 20 million Americans health care insurance, was too expensive. They are also considering the bill allowing states to opt out of this system for pre-existing medical conditions.

Kimmel brought attention to this specific detail on the video because his baby was born with a pre-existing medical condition, and the only reason the boy survived was because there was a dedicated team of nurses and doctors readily available to treat him and begin the complex surgery.

If this bill is approved and this happens to a family of lower income and no medical insurance, their baby would definitely not survive.

Fortunately, as of today, the health care overhaul proposed by Trump’s party has not yet passed - in fact, U.S. congressmen voted to increase funding by $2 billion. (Kansas City).

About the Cuts

The many cuts proposed by Trump’s government have been largely criticized, as the main goal seems to be providing tax cuts for the wealthy (such as himself) by using the savings of the cuts and increasing tax for middle class and the poor - not to mention providing funds for his plan to build a wall on the border with Mexico.

Trump has been vocal about the issue, claiming that these cuts would greatly benefit the economy of the U.S.:

Most institutions plead against the cuts and changes proposed so far. Medical groups like the American Medical Association worry that insurances for pre-existing conditions could turn out to be unaffordable.

Other cuts will also affect Arts and Science institutions, which we talked about here.
