Have you ever thought about how easy it would be to add tabs to applications and programs? Source: Forbes

Many users work on projects that require gathering information from various sources. Let’s say for example you are writing a report on a market research survey that you just did for your company. All the data you need to reference is probably on an Excel sheet somewhere, while you are writing the report on a Word document. These are two different apps. In this case, you will have to go back and forth with each file to reference the data and write the report at the same time. This can be very annoying and wastes a lot of time.

It gets worse if you need to reference from more than one source. Take for instance a situation where the report you are writing also needs some references from the internet or from a PowerPoint presentation you made. Juggling through these apps to get the information you need is hectic. The good news is that you won’t need to do this anymore.

Microsoft is offering a new solution. The company is working to provide tabs for Windows that can help you access your resources easier. Think of it this way. While writing the market research report, imagine being able to access all the data in the spreadsheet, the information on the site, and the images on the PowerPoint presentation without having to move from your Word document. Sounds interesting, right?

Tabs are often standard in web browsers. However, you never see them in other apps. Microsoft is looking to make sure that tabs are available in all apps. In other words, if you need information outside of the app that you are working with at the moment, you can simply have a tab there that allows you to access it in one click. Although this is a simple idea, it will surely excite a lot of people.

But it gets better. If you save your project to work on it later, Windows will also save all the tabs that you were working with. For example, if there were a few tabs on the Word document where you were working on the report, the next time you open that document those tabs will still be there. However, if you don’t want to reopen all the tabs, you can choose which ones to close as you open the Word document. The same will also apply even if you had saved the document on OneDrive. Microsoft will call the tabs associated with a given document a “set.”

The tabs won’t be available in Microsoft Word alone. All apps on the Windows platform will have that feature. It’s going to be a little bit strange seeing tabs in your work area. However, once you realize just how convenient they are, you will wonder where they have been all this time. It’s not clear when Microsoft will start to roll out these new developments. Nonetheless, it’s something worth looking forward to, especially for people who work on big projects all the time.
