Sony has just announced that it will launch a brand new gaming console. It will be a tiny version of the PS1 and is set to bring back memories of the original console that’s seen by many fans as one of the most revolutionary gaming platforms in the industry. The PlayStation Classic, as it will be called, will start hitting shelves in December this year. It will also be relatively cheaper compared to the new generation consoles retailing at only $99.99.

Sony is not the only company to have revisited the idea of offering a classic console to avid gamers around the world. Nintendo too has been doing great in this area with its super sleek and small SNES and NES Classics. Sony’s PlayStation Classic is expected to come loaded with several well-loved games. The lineup will feature nearly 20 classic games including Jumping Flash, Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3, Wild Arms, Ridge Racer etc.

Sony didn’t hesitate to claim bragging rights in the console market while making the announcement for the PlayStation Classic. In a statement released through its blog, the Japanese company noted that, 25 years ago when the original PlayStation was introduced, the company gave gamers the chance to play 3D rendered video games in their homes for the first time. Sony also reminded the world that the PlayStation was the first home console in video game history to ship out over 100 million units all over the world.

The company believes that there’s some nostalgic value in re-launching the original PlayStation. Gamers who were there from the beginning can rediscover the games they loved and the experience they enjoyed playing them. As for new gamers who haven’t had the chance to savor the ground-breaking magic of the PS1, well, this is your once in a lifetime opportunity. Sony has confirmed that the new classic mini PlayStation will be at least 45% smaller than the real PlayStation. It will also come with two smaller controllers that will all mimic the first controllers on the original PlayStation. Users will also get an HDMI and USB cable.

The console will be available for pre-order in limited markets. Sony said that it intends to share more details about the new classic console in the months ahead before it finally starts selling in December. The company added that all the games on offer will be playable in their original format. This way, Sony is trying to take you down the memory lane and bring back those emotions of playing the very first PlayStation.

Most gamers who started playing video games during the era of the PS1 know exactly how influential this console was and continues to be. There’s no doubt that Sony is creatively trying to bank on this nostalgia to make some money. But even then, there are many people out there who will gladly pay $99.99 for a chance to enjoy this classic console once again. The original PS1 first came out in 1995 and it was an instant hit in the gaming industry.
